OpenSky’s First Thanksgiving Celebration

by Caitlin Heikkila November, 7 2011 Posted in News

Its our first Thanksgiving dinner here at OpenSky, and we’re celebrating all November long.  Our foodie and design curators picked out their favorite kitchen tools, tabletop accessories, and tasty treats for the occasion. Bring on the pumpkin pie, the stuffing, and plenty of turkey– we’re ready to go! Take a look at a few of our picks below, or click here to see everything you need for your Thanksgiving holiday.

Maison Terre Thanksgiving Food Bundle

Beekman1802 found this bundle that spices up any Thanksgiving dinner. This pack of turkey brine, mulling spices, and pumpkin muffin mix adds all of those holiday flavors, AND your kitchen will smell amazing.

Turkey 101 Kit

Georgia Pellegrini knows that cooking up a Thanksgiving turkey isn’t always easy. That’s why she picked out a tool kit to make it a cinch. Her turkey 101 kit includes a measuring bulb baster, an endurance bamboo twine dispenser, butcher’s twine, and poultry lifters.

Arthur Court Grapevine Serving Set

Whether you say stuffing or dressing, Whitney Miller found the best way to serve it. These leaf-shaped serving utensils are a beautiful and festive addition to any place setting. They just scream Fall, don’t they?

Dorie Greenspan Gives us the Low-Down on her Cooking Essentials.

by Caitlin Heikkila November, 4 2011 Posted in Our Curators

Attention foodies, Dorie Greenspan is planning her upcoming OpenSky finds, and she’s so excited to share them with you. We got the chance to hang out with Dorie yesterday; she showed the team the products that she’s most enthusiastic about– including lots of practical kitchen tools, but also some beautiful tabletop accessories.

Dorie raved about her most recent offer, the De Buyer Mineral B Element Pans. “A great recipe deserves a great pan,” she said. Check out her recipe for Bistrot Paul Bert Pepper Steak (and try not to drool), the steak she recommends cooking up in one of these pans.

We’re thrilled to have Dorie as a part of the OpenSky family; just follow her to see why!

An Afternoon with Jacques Torres.

by Caitlin Heikkila November, 3 2011 Posted in Our Curators

Our sweet teeth are aching. We’re thrilled to have Jacques Torres as a curator on OpenSky, and we can’t wait for his first delicious offer to go live. The OpenSky team visited his store in downtown Manhattan yesterday to take photos and video for his holiday finds, and got the chance to see Mr. Chocolate in action. Jacques whipped up a little house made of chocolate like it was nothing, then dazzled us with his bite-size chocolate creating skills.

The offer we’re thinking about right now? Jacques’ infamous hot chocolate with a chocolatière and glass mugs. We know what we’re gifting this holiday season. Follow Jaques Torres on OpenSky to get a taste of his upcoming treats.

Q&A with OpenSky-er Genevieve Joy

by Caitlin Heikkila November, 2 2011 Posted in Staff

At OpenSky, we love to get to know our members, so we want you to know us a little better too. So I’m going to start introducing them to you to with some Q&A sessions. First up, Genevieve Joy.

Where did you grow up?

Genevieve: In Irvington, New York on the Hudson River. It’s a small town.

When did you come to NYC?

Genevieve: I moved to New York for college; I went to Columbia. Then I left for a year to make wine in Oregon and New Zealand, but now I’m back in Brooklyn, living with my best friend.

Wow! That sounds awesome. What are you doing for the holidays?

Genevieve: Working at OpenSky…. No, no, I’ll be home for the holidays. Hopefully I can make time for a ski trip at Hunter Mountain.

What’s your go-to afternoon snack?

Genevieve: Whatever samples we have in the OpenSky kitchen! Yesterday it was pickles from Donovan’s Cellar, last week it was kale chips. That’s totally honest.

What is your most-listened-to song on your iPod?

Genevieve: Maps by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

What do you do at OpenSky?

Genevieve: I’m a buyer on the home team, so it’s my job to find cool and unique products, and reach out to get the products our curators ask for. But I’ve probably had more different jobs than anyone else in the office. Yesterday was my one year anniversary here!

Congrats! Do you have a favorite curator?

Genevieve: Oohh, that’s a really divisive question! I have two favorites. Carolyn Murphy and Beekman1802. They’re both throwing the coolest products my way. I’m personally discovering a lot because of them. Plus, I got to go upstate to the Beekman1802 farm– and it was amazing.

What does OpenSky mean for you?

Genevieve: OpenSky is discovering your new favorite companies and products.  And great coworkers.

The True Life of an OpenSky Contest Winner.

Tara (left) tagged herself in this photo on the OpenSky Facebook page to win a $500 OpenSky credit.

If you attended our “One Night in New York City” party with Perez Hilton, you know that we held a contest  to win a $500 OpenSky credit by tagging yourself in the party photo album. Tara Renee tagged herself in our album after the party, an now has a $500 OpenSky shopping spree on her hands.

“I have never one a contest like this before which makes it even more exciting, there are so many things I love on OpenSky but I think the first thing I am going to buy is the 22k Gold-Vermeil Leaf Earrings by Kevia. They are gorgeous and I have been looking for a good pair of earrings I think these are perfect for me!” said Tara.

She noted that she’s a big fan of Kristin Cavallari and likes to take fashion cues from her, using Kristin’s looks as her own style guide. Aside from her winnings, Tara raved about partying with Perez.

“The party with Perez can not even be explained in words, if you weren’t there you definitely missed out on a life time experience. Hammerstein was filled with excitement and everyone in the crowd was going crazy singing along and dancing to the songs played by the amazing artists who were invited to this event,” Tara said.
